Hubby had a dream about you. He dreamed that we got a Betta fish, and we called him "you". More than just a "hey you" kind of name. It was inspiration. So we came up with Eugene before we even met you.
That day we went to the pet store looking for the perfect fish to fit the name. There you were in your iridescent glory. Flashes of purple and blue from your silvery body. The way your dorsal fin curled was perfect- you were Eugene.
We brought you home and tended you carefully. You even had a live plant. You moved with us to three apartments, you saw us bring home Luna.
I think you even got to recognize us. At least you swam crazily when we walked by, hoping for some food. Your greatest pleasure was in the blue balloon from a birthday. It happened to float near your bowl, Eugene, and you "loved" it. You play fought for hours until we noticed.
In the end Eugene, it was the cold that killed you. After two-and-a-half long years, the heater went out. It was 45 degrees inside when we got home, and you were resting peacefully on the bottom of your bowl.
May the waters always be warm, and may there be plenty of food.
Rest in Peace, Betta Eugene
